The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Receives Motorola Solutions Foundation Grant
Fort Myers, Fla (November 18, 2020) – The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Inc., announced it has received a grant for $5,000 from the Motorola Solutions Foundation, the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions.
Through the grant, The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools will teach middle and high school students about solar energy and its powerful potential, to grow food and run the systems we need to water it, communicate about it and preserve it. Students will learn about all the applications of solar power and the benefits of this renewable energy source and teach middle school students what they have learned as they install a solar power system and hydroponic garden system at the middle school. Students will need to calculate the power needed to run a timer and 60 gph pump and decide how it will work on cloudy days. They will need to learn how to store and convert the electric energy to a usable form to power multiple devices, such as emergency and two-way radios, a light, or other small appliances and devices.
Students will also engineer systems to grow vegetables vertically in towers, learning to build and plumb the system. They will create automated watering drip irrigation systems, and find the best chemical fertilizers to use to optimize growth. The food grown must then be harvested and efficiently transported to the cafeteria, so a system must be created to do this as well. Students will imagine the utilization of this technology in the residential setting. Finally, students will learn about the careers that provide these services. We have 1,325 middle school students, 130 high school students participating in this project.
