The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools Receives $10,000 to EmPOWER STEM Educators
Fort Myers, FL (November 11, 2024) — As part of a statewide $150,000 grant from Florida Power & Light Company, the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools has been awarded $10,000 to support STEM-focused teacher peer-to-peer learning opportunities. This initiative aims to address the need for enhanced STEM instruction among elementary teachers through a peer-to-peer learning program. Teacher Leaders will facilitate three workshops—covering Physical Science, Earth & Space Science, and Life Science—over the course of the year. Following each workshop, Teacher Observers will implement the strategies learned in their classrooms, followed by observation, and debrief sessions to refine their skills. Key milestones include workshops in November, February, and March, with observation and debriefing sessions scheduled in alignment. The program’s progress will be measured through pre- and post-tests, as well as online surveys, with final evaluations to be completed by April 30, 2025. The initiative will be primarily coordinated by the Elementary Science Team of the School District of Lee County.
“STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is a vital part of a well-rounded curriculum that prepares our students for successful STEM careers,” said Marshall T. Bower, President & CEO of the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. “This FPL grant enables our elementary teachers to work together on the best teaching methods for our younger students in this critical area of instruction.”
“These investments in STEM education play a pivotal role in empowering students with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive innovation, strengthen our economy and shape the future of education,” stated Charlotte Miller, External Affairs Manager for FPL. “These grants create a lasting impact, shaping a brighter future for all of Florida.”
